The other day, my grandson Charles, who is almost four and endlessly curious, asked me to jump with him.

I smiled and said, “No, Deema doesn’t jump.”

(Deema is what he calls me.)

He looked at me thoughtfully for a moment and then innocently asked:

“Is it because you’re too heavy?”

There was no judgment in his voice. No criticism. No intention to hurt my feelings.

Just curiosity.

What surprised me most wasn’t his question.

It was my response to it.

How Emotional Healing Changes Our Reactions

A few years ago, that question would have landed very differently.

I’ve struggled with my weight for most of my life, and comments like that, even innocent ones, often triggered feelings of shame, self-criticism, and painful old stories about my worth.

I would replay the comment over and over in my mind. I’d question myself. I’d feel hurt.

But this time?

It didn’t sting.

I didn’t spiral.

I didn’t feel the need to defend myself, explain myself, or retreat inward.

And that wasn’t because my body had suddenly changed.

It was because my relationship with my body had changed.

Healing the Emotional Connection to Food, Weight, and Self-Worth

Over the years, I’ve done significant work using EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), Biofield Tuning, and other energy psychology approaches to address the emotional roots of my struggles with weight.

I discovered that my relationship with food was never just about food.

It was connected to comfort.

Safety.

Stress.

Old wounds.

And beliefs about my value and worthiness.

As I worked through those layers, something remarkable happened.

The emotional charge began to soften.

The triggers that once felt overwhelming gradually lost their power.

Not overnight.

But little by little.

What Healing Really Looks Like

Many people imagine healing as a dramatic breakthrough.

Sometimes it is.

But often, healing is much quieter.

Sometimes healing looks like hearing a comment that once would have hurt and realizing it no longer does.

Sometimes it looks like staying present instead of disappearing into an old story.

Sometimes it looks like responding with compassion instead of criticism.

That moment with Charles was one of those reminders.

A simple conversation that showed me how far I’ve come.

There Is a Gentler Way Forward

If you’ve struggled with your weight, body image, emotional eating, or feelings of not being enough, I want you to know something:

Healing doesn’t come through shame.

It doesn’t come through punishment.

And it rarely comes through willpower alone.

Real, lasting change happens when we create safety, compassion, and understanding around the emotions driving our behaviors.

When we heal the root, the symptoms often begin to shift.

If you’re ready to explore a gentler way forward, I’d love to support you on that journey.

You don’t have to do it perfectly.

You don’t have to have it all figured out.

You simply have to be willing to take the first step.
